It was two weeks after the day she turned 18
all dressed in white, going to the church that night
She had his box of letters in the passenger seat,
six pence in her shoe
something borrowed something blue

The sky was overcast today, of all days. Clouds loomed overhead like a silky grey blanket. You sat silently adjusting the beautiful sapphire pendent that hung around your neck. Across the room as a lovely pair of milk white elegant heels that were your grandmothers. You had been itchy to wear since you were 5, when you clomped around like a horse, when your feet where so small they practically drown in them. You smiled at the old memory, you were 18 now and they fit perfectly. You grabbed the box of crumpled and folded envelope off your bed and trudged out of your house. You got into your beat up old car and placed the sacred box in the passenger side.
Here we go, you thought.

and when the church doors opened up wide she put her veil down trying to hide the tears oh
she just couldn't believe it
she heard the trumpets from the military band and the flowers fell out of her hands

You stood outside the door of the big church, not truly starting at the dark swirls of the oak. It had finally registered again in your mind why you were here. You knew this day would come, and now here you were. Standing at the doors of the chapel, you beautiful new dress draped around you, light makeup in fear of the tears smudging it, and a small arrangement of flowers in your hands. You took a shaky breath as you adjusted the lacey veil over your face. You looked up at the doors in front of you, there was no way you could turn back.
With a small amount of effort the doors slowly opened to reveal the rows and rows of people all stuffed into one room. Some ceased there light chatter to see who was arriving, and soon all eye were on you. You received many glances and head bobs of assurance, but you just looked straight ahead. As you walked down the middle aisle of the church, your brain started working. Everything flooded in at once, and you were forced to stop, barely half way. Your whole being had gone numb, and you were not aware that you were on the floor until a pair of solemn blondes started lifting you. You couldn't look at the men's faces, they reminded you too much of him. When your feet had steadied, you were guided to the front of the room. You saw your American love there, there was nothing on this earth that would have stop the tears.

Baby, why'd you leave me, why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
I cant even breathe
It's like I'm, looking from a distance, standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now,
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream

*Flashback*
"W-what do you mean, 'leaving'?" The word stuck in your throat. Alfred F Jones, The love of your life since the first day you met back in freshman year, was sitting next to you on the small park bench. You had fallen hard for the blue-eyed goofball when he bumped into you on the way to class, forcing you to spill your belongings across the floor. He had been kind enough to help you pick everything up, claiming it was 'Heroic protocol to help a lady in need'.
After that you couldn't keep your eyes off the American 'hero', and he couldn't keep his eye off you. You had your first date within a week, your first kiss within a month, and you were going steady with his class ring around your neck within a year. Now your four year anniversary was coming to a close and the 'Hero' had just told you one of the most shocking things you were to hear in your life.
"I've finished my training, and they are sending me off to war," Alfred's blue eyes sparked with excitement and worry, "You said you weren't going to make a big fuss about joining the army, [Name]."
"I never actually expected you to get diploid, Al," You watched his face carefully. The male shifted on the bench and stuffed his hands in his infamous bomber jacket.
"I know, babe, but this is what I always wanted. To be able to defend my own country," His eyes gleamed with a child-like joy. You smiled softly, and touched his face.
"Just promise you will come back to me, ok? I love you so much." Alfred's mouth moved into a full blown grin.
"I was hoping you would say that!" You watched as he pulled his right hand out of his pocket. "[Name][Last name], Will you marry me?" A small black velvet box was opened to reveal a delicate silver ring with a small diamond resting atop it.
"I know it's not much, but it's the best I could do on a teenagers salary," Alfred looked into your [e/c] eyes. Those eyes traveled from Alfred's face, to the ring, and back to his face.
"Yes!" Several birds fluttered away from your shout. Your arms latched around Alfred's neck and his wrapped around your waist.
"Now I defiantly have a reason to come back," Alfred whispered before he kissed you.
*time lapse*
"Coming!" You hollered from across your small apartment. You ran to the door, pushing small strained of hair behind your ear as you went. You had been cleaning when you heard a sharp rap on the door. It had been almost a year since Alfred had left, and you were counting every second until he was back in your arms. You straighten out your shirt before pulling the door open. You were shocked when a strict looking man in a uniform waited on the other side.

"Can I help you, sir?" You asked politely.
The officer cleared his throat before speaking, "Are you [Name][Last name]?". You have your head a slight nod. The stiff male stretched out his arm, placing a white envelope in your face. You looked at it before retrieving the package. The uniformed man nodded to you, turned on his heels and walked away.
You ran through several possibilities of what this letter was as you went back inside, but not one of those thoughts even came close. Your soft eyes scanned the white sheet. Your content expression changed drastically as you released the meaning of this letter. Your back hit the door and you slowly slid down to the floor, salty tears began pouring over the rims of your [e/c] eyes. This can't be real, you thought, I must be dreaming. You soon came to realize, though, Alfred wasn't coming home.

*End flash back*

The preacher man said let us bow our heads and pray
lord please lift his soul and heal this hurt
then the congregation all stood up and sang the saddest song that she ever heard
then they handed her a folded up flag and
she held on to all she had left of him oh and what could've been
and then guns rang one last shot and it felt like a bullet in her heart

After the preacher made the congregation bow their heads and pray one last time, they all stood up to sing. You followed their actions mechanically, but didn't sing, you could focus on the words or the music, all you could see was his face.
When the song finally ended, a man dressed in a familiar uniform walked toward you. In his gloved hands lay an American flag, folded neatly into a triangle, you took the treasure sadly. You looked at the smooth fabric for a long while, then you pressed it tightly to your chest. You hadn't cried very much during the service, your mind working in slow-motion, even the small murmurs of 'He's not coming home now' didn't phase you. As soon as you heard the piercing gunfire from outside, that was when everything speed up and smashed into you and tears flooded from your eyes.

Baby, why'd you leave me, why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
I can't even breathe
It's like I'm, looking from a distance, standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now,
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream

Oh,Oh Baby, why'd you leave me, why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
Ohh i'll never know
It's like I'm, looking from a distance, standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now,
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream

Oh this is just a dream
just a dream, oh!!

You hadn't realized you had been crying until you shot up from bed. Your breathing was heavy, and you clutched your chest to steady your racing heart. You had been having dreams like this for over ten years now, each time your memories become more and more vivid. You hugged your knees to your chest and rested your forehead on your knees.
You jumped when a strong arm slid itself around your waist, and a nose was buried into your hair.
"Was it that dream again," The person asked. You shifted closer to the warm body and nodded your head.
"Every time it gets worse and worse," You replied, shaking slightly. The other person shifted you onto their lap and nuzzled their warm face into your neck. The breath tickled, and you smiled a bit.
"I wish I could help you, babe." You hummed your agreement, and enjoyed the felting of heat against your body. A small creak was heard, and a small [h/c] boy with familiar blue eyes peeked in.
"Mommy I head you crying again, are you ok?" The child asked.
"Yes, [Son's name], I'm ok now." You chuckled.
"Well, can I still sleep in your's and Daddy's bed, so I can be the hero and protect you?" The little boy rubbed his eyes, and trotted over to the bed.
"Of course you can sweety," you picked [Son's name] up and tucked him between you and his father. The young boy smiled sleepily before drifting off. You smiled and lay back down.
"We sure raised a good one, Happy 17 year anniversary, babe," The older male chuckled, before rolling over to sleep.
"We sure did. Happy anniversary, Alfred, I love you."
